Renault Launches the new Koleos

by | Feb 15, 2019

Renault has finally launched an all-new Koleos, and it looks absolutely beautiful.

It’s bigger, arguably better with more tech than the outgoing model which is now quite long in the tooth.

The new design aligns itself more with the current design trajectory of the Renault brand, and it does so marvellously on the new Koleos. The front and rear light packages have employed LED lighting to improve visibility drastically at night.

On the inside you’re going to find a plush interior and some fancy tech including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities and a rather intriguing instrument cluster design.

The Koleos comes in three variants: Expression 4×2, Dynamique 4×2 and Dynamique 4×4, with the latter including their unique 4×4-i system which uses 3 modes to give you utmost control over the vehicle.

2WD engages only the front wheels, while 4WD AUTO permanently analyses conditions and grip levels and uses the information provided by its sensors to calculate the ideal front/rear torque split. Up to 50 percent of available torque can be transmitted to the rear wheels if necessary.  The 4WD LOCK mode simply locks the vehicle in permanent 4WD mode splitting power evenly between the front and rear wheels.  This mode however disengages automatically at speeds over 40km/h.

Even more impressive is the 210mm ground clearance available on the 4×4 model which makes it one of the highest vehicles in its class.

The new Koleos is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5 litre providing 126kW and is mated to a CVT X-Tronic gearbox, similar to that found in the Nissan X-Trail.  While not the most frugal or most powerful motor available it is more than enough to get you to where you need to go comfortably.

Claimed fuel consumption on a combined cycle is 8.8 litres/100km which puts it on par with similar engines in its class.

This is an incredibly competitive class that the Renault Koleos is playing in, but with the tech available, its comfort and pricing, it is predicted to be a good seller.

Alternatives to consider in this class are the Nissan X-Trail, Mazda CX-5, VW Tiguan, Haval H6C and Subaru Forrester.

All models come standard with a 5-year/150 000km mechanical warranty; plus a 5-year/ 90 000km service plan and a 6-year anti-corrosion warranty, with service intervals at 15 000km.
